Being a historian is a difficult job… this is because there aren’t a whole lot of suprises in history. Nobody is going to give you a whole lot of attention for writing a book about the ASTONISHING NEW FACT that JAPAN LOST WW II. People tend to go "Yeah, so what? Tell me something I don’ t know."
This means that it is difficult for history professors to get a lot of attention. It is hard to "discover" new "facts" about history… if you are lucky and work hard and are very very very lucky then maybe you can do something like find the Titanic or the Monitor or the Atocha… or if you are really good at writing and pick the right topic and have a gift for telling a good story maybe you can write something like Band of Brothers…but that is one guy out of a million… the rest tend to wind up doing seminars about "Jaw and dental injuries of the American Civil War" or "The role of the child witness in late mideval real estate transactions". (Don’t laugh, I now professors that did both those topics as their doctoral theisis. We aren’t talking Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark here.)
Every so often someone decides that they will try to get attention by publishing a VERY innovative "re-interpretation" of the facts… in short they lie their behind off and hope to make money off the book sales (Hey it worked for Dan Brown… the DaVinci Code had him laughing all the way to the bank.) or that their lie will support a political point of view and the politicians they support will help them get a good job at a State School.
TV people will be happy to put these guys on TV… they need ratings and lets face it, you can only run Band of Brothers SO many times… even on the History Channel.
So what you ran across is a someone who told an outrageous lie in order to get onto TV in the hopes of making some money off a book deal, or getting enough attention that they could get an academic job somewhere.

This was the Old West….maybe she got buried with more than just her boots on……morticians built the caskets and they pretty much just had the family, clean them up and ready the body for display……Family would have already known and certainly would have kept it quiet……
No, William Bonnie/Billy the Kid was not a female..
