It seems like the media pays more attention to male to females than female to males. (in general)

Oddly enough, there are far less statistics about female to male crossdressers than there are for male to female. Most that I’ve seen indicate that about 10% of the male population DOES crossdress to some extent on a regular basis. For some this might only be one or two specific articles of women’s clothing while for others it’s everything from head to toe – including a full compliment of makeup, wig, polished nails, heels, etc. People should understand that being a crossdresser does NOT make someone gay, bisexual etc. these same surveys indicate that 90% of all crossdressers are totally heterosexual with no desires or intentions of ever being anything else. The professional communities are discovering more every day that points to crossdressing being something that a person (male or female) is BORN with rather than something they make a voluntary to do. There is also strong evidence that many of the medications prescribed to pregnant women during the ‘baby boom’ generation MAY have had something to do with it. Although theories abound as to what might be specific causes, there are only a couple that seem to reinforce the fact that it’s something one is born with. One is the ‘hormone wash theory’, another is the ‘stuttering gene theory’, both of which have been scientifically proven.
I have heard more than one woman say that they don’t dress up to impress men in particular, but often times to impress other women. One has to admit that a well dressed and made up woman is admired by both genders so this would seem to be the case. This admiration is much stronger in crossdressers – so strong in fact that they want to emulate these women in an effort to capture what they imagine what it must feel like to look pretty. Walk through any men’s department in a department store and notice that most of the men’s wear items are dark in color and basically ‘drab’ for the most part. Then go through the women’s department and notice the array of different colors, styles, and the wider selections. You’ll find that there’s more ‘excitement’ in the latter.
The biggest problem faced by crossdressers today is that of a public who is completely uneducated about what crossdressing really is, but more importantly what it ISN’T. Until our societies shed this ignorance and realize that crossdressers aren’t the perverted individuals they are often perceived to be, most crossdressers will remain deeply closeted just as they are today.

Society is more accepting of FtMs in a sense. A girl who wears her boyfriend’s shirt isn’t thought of in any weird way but a man wearing his girlfriends clothes is instantly viewed as perverse. The media wants ratings and something that is viewed as strange or perverse will instantly get them more ratings so they go with makes them more money
Most societies are a patriarchy. Patriarchies lionize masculinity and are dismissive of femininity. This is especially true in anyone they think is male (a transsexual woman). On the flip-side trans men draw a lot less attention because who wouldn’t want to be a man? Julia Serano wrote a whole book on this subject called "Whipping Girl"

I think it’s mainly an issue of visibility. When someone sees an FTM, they don’t know they’re transsexual at all, because he looks like every other man. Unless he’s pre-hormones, in which case people will assume "butch lesbian" first. It’s surprising how many people don’t even realise there is such a thing as a FTM transsexual.
I attend a mixed transsexual group for both MTF and FTM transsexuals, and it seems to be a roughly even split.
