Atheists: your child shows signs of developing a fetish – what do you do?
I’m talking about one of the common fetishes, not the really bizarre ones. You know, it might be shoes, diapers, cross dressing etc. Studies have shown that in some cases, people who have developed these fetishes can live deeply troubled lives as their fetish becomes so much a part of their sexuality that it inhibits their ability to form relationships with people.
Now, a Christian parent can quickly counter the problem by making their child feel guilty and sinful about it and though this might not be the most ethical way of achieving a result, it does kind of work. How would an atheist parent attempt to solve the problem?

Changing him from a fetishist to a sin obsessed psychotic is not in my mind the best solution. A therapy is more appropriate.
Show them 2 girls 1 cup.
Hire a good therapist as soon as possible. It’s almost impossible to rid someone of a fetish, just like OCD, but it can be managed.
Why would I try to change my child?

Well, I happen to have an atheist father and happen to occasionally cross dress as a man, when I feel unattractive or don’t want people to notice me. My father doesn’t care, its my life and I can live it how I want in his mind.
I honestly don’t know and have never thought about it. I’ve never had a problem like that with my kids. Unless my son constantly torturing me with being a teenaged wise-ass counts as a fetish
It depends on how consumed the child is with the fetish. If my boy likes ladies shoes, I’m not going to assume he’s destined to be obsessed with shoes unless I see some sign of an obsession. If I see a sign of obsession, I’d take him to a psychologist that he can connect with – because kids generally don’t feel comfortable going into details about these things with their parents.
But I’m going to love my kid no matter what he’s into. If it’s not a problem for him, it’s not a problem for me.
I really don’t think it does work. I’d like to see if those "studies" asked about religion. My guess is the troubled ones are the ones feeling like they have a deep dark sin they aren’t dealing with.
If one of my children had a fetish, I would encourage them to seek like minded people to enjoy it with. Never try to force a fetish on anyone.
I run into guys with foot fetishes all the time. (I have pretty feet). They have never seemed any more troubled than anyone else.
My child’s fetishes would be none of my business. Hopefully I would have raised them responsible enough not to act on fetishes that could harm another being.
Also, "cross dressing" may be a fetish to some, but real transgenders should not be considered such, because they truly recognize themselves as the opposite sex.

and that creates more psychological problems in a child. =)
diapers? I think I would wonder what I did wrong as a parent, and maybe intervene and talk to them about it. cross-dressing? I think I’d leave them alone.
I would talk to them about it, and if that does not work, remove the object for a month. Beyond that I would ask for professional help.
